For those like myself who are a little hard of hearing and a lot lazy on the reading of linear notes since the demise of physical album copies, if it weren’t for lyric videos we would never know what anyone is actually saying. The Switch: I’m attempting to watch one romcom a day for the month of February. That statement is gay enough to make my love of The Switch gay in it’s own right. I think I’m just drawn to their repeated use of gay phrases like ‘friend zone’ and ‘seed dad’ and the adorable child who thinks Jennifer Aniston is a lesbian. I assume my love of the movie is my babymaker’s way of telling me it’s time. The notoriously private star of The Beaver, Jodie Foster, used her Golden Globe Lifetime Achievement spotlight to confirm what most of us already suspected- that she is a MILF. Also, a big ol’ lesbo. Well, it was definitely a better year for queer music than it was for TV and film IMHO, so in no particular order, my top 10 picks of 2012.

Tegan and Sara—Not only would I have to say that the single “Closer” is by far the #1 song of 2012 that invoked uncontrollable scrying on my part, but seeing them up close and previewing more songs off the upcoming album in a small theatre setting in Seattle was the ultimate Tegan and Sarapy experience. The 2013 release should really be called Heartbreaker. Here’s another jab to that emotional place.

Garbage—Having given up on them after their last couple of releases, I was skeptical of Not Your Kind of People. Turns out it’s a more than solid album, and I also have to give them props for the most fun I had at a show this year. Sorry I ever doubted you, I’ll never do it again.

Cherri Bomb—A band that I’ve literally been watching grow for years. An old friend of mine being their manager, I’ve had the tip off on these talented young ladies for awhile now. Always impressed by their playing ability, but nothing really having caught my ear, one day I was feeling especially masochistic and got a ticket to The Warped Tour just to see them. I know, right. Previous to the show, I started to put a little more effort into listening to their debut full-length This Is The End Of Control, but I wasn’t convinced until I saw them live. Their energy is insane—maybe it’s because drummer Nia Lovelis needlessly chugs and spews Monster Energy AS SHE’S PLAYING, but they also average around age 15 so there ya go. I might have fangirled a little. Also, besides Cherri Bomb, who are the kids listening to these days? It’s fucking scary.

Eighteen Individual Eyes—Unnovae Nights was probably the most heavily rotated album in my collection this year. As far as I’m concerned, every song this Seattle based group puts out is gold. Now, if only I would be a little more diligent with my new camera…

Riot Grrrl Karaoke—This is like my Christmas. It happens once a year as a fundraiser for the Not Enough! Queer Music and Arts Festival, and every year that I participate, I’m almost positive that it will take title of my favorite show I played reguardless of any other project. The feeling of performing the songs that inspired me to start playing in the first place in front of an always enthusiastic and packed room is unmatched. These are my people. Here is me looking psycho and singing Hole’s “Pretty On The Inside”.

Miley’s Bun—Fuck, I wish this was a band, but it’s actually just a haircut. Still, it was a pretty big deal and speaking of haircuts…

Agent Ribbons— The Family Haircut cassette EP, released by Portland based tape label Cassingle and Loving It, is a treat for anyone looking to escape into a minimalist, dreamy wonder world of slow dancing in your room with your animal of choice. Plus I cannot forget the look on my roommates face when a package of real hair (from who?) arrived that she then had to cut up and tape into the packaging.

Judas H. Priest—Best tribute band of the year, and this is coming from someone who looks like they would listen to a lot of Judas Priest but doesn’t.

Justin Bieber—Looks like a lesbian. Puts out new album. I’m a Belieber.

Taking into consideration my previous shit talking of GLEE , even I find it strange that I would be eagerly rushing past the Justin Bieber concert to the first-run mall movie theatre, waving a twenty at the concessions stand all in the name of Pitch Perfect. Despite the possibility of a Journey number or seven, after having a good chuckle at the trailer I figured the possibility of it happening in farts and queefs was even greater, so I was sold.

What I’m even more astonished by is the fact that not only were the musical numbers performed mostly in a non-parody like manner, but by the end of the movie, I was left with a total toner (musical boner). Their rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s Since You’ve Been Gone may have even invoked a little hip gyrating and Pretzel M&Ms box microphone action on my part (though to be fair, I was half trying to inhale the candy).

While there is the obvious lesbian character and a couple of “are they gonna make out now?!” moments, the movie seemed a little gay-lite to me for being a musical. But I actually have to aca-plaud Pitch Perfect on not going as overboard with the “fag jokes” as they could have and Turn(ing) the Beat Around, getting even the grumpiest of dykes and straightest of men to not only sit through, but actually enjoy 112 minutes of song and dance. And projectile vomiting. -KT

You probably don’t want my new DJ persona, DJ LEZ DANCE!, at your party. She spins Tegan and Sara exclusively, which often results in a lot of awkward scrying (scream crying), limb flailing, and fetal positions on your dance floor.

That being said, the new single Closer off their forthcoming album Heartthrob is a total jam and lyrics like “the wind is really blowing” leave a lot of room for playful interpretive dancing. - KT

I stopped watching Glee after Season One because I realized I don’t like the singing part of it. Erika is the Glee-otch and while my curiosity for gay things may have still gotten the best of me for a blip or five of Season Two, eventually my annoyance with the singing and the lesbians drove me away for good.

Except for how could I pass up this clip of Celebrity Skin by my favorite band ever, Hole? Well, at first it was actually really easy and I went to bed not having seen it, but then I woke up and made the mistake of clicking away furiously at all the things before my eyes were even open. After cleaning all the blood out of my ears, I knew then and there that it was not the music producer paying homage to a great band by using one of their songs, but that it was indeed done by someone who must truly hate Courtney Love. -KT

Magic Mike: Best and most elaborately staged theatrical presentation I’ve ever had the pleasure to gawk open-mouthed at, and that’s coming from a drag connoisseur.
